Mandarin Chinese 

Regular Immersion Session

9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

 Dynasties of Ancient China – China boasts one of the oldest and longest lasting civilizations in the history of the world!  In this week-long camp, children will learn about some of the families that ruled the lands.  From emperors and kings, children will learn culture and language while participating in hands-on activities, crafts, and games.

Linguist Apprentices (Ages 3-5) Through music and play, campers will develop their conversational skills in a second language. Children will engage in arts and crafts and hands-on projects while learning another language.

Language Ambassadors (Ages 6-10) Campers will participate in project-based learning activities that will help them connect the foreign language they are learning to meaning, providing them the opportunity to develop their conversational skills while learning about fun and interesting topics.

Early Immersion Session

7:00 AM – 9:00 AM

Supplemental thematic unit: The Chinese Calendar The Chinese calendar was developed by many dynasties in Ancient China, and it’s still used today.  2018 is the Year of the Dog.  Children will learn new vocabulary while discovering the 12 animals years, and 5 elements associated with it’s zodiac, as well as the year they were born!

Linguist Apprentices (Ages 3-5) Campers will work on phonetic skills development in small groups, using rhymes and rhythm to further develop their conversational skills.

Language Ambassadors (Ages 6-10)Campers will use this time to work in small groups to develop reading and writing skills in the target language and practice their conversational skills by talking about the stories they are reading and writing in the second language.

 

Afternoon Immersion Session

(Optional session)

3:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Supplemental thematic unit: – Made in Ancient China– The ancient Chinese were known for many inventions that still have a lasting impact on the world we know today.  Did you know silk, paper, gunpowder and even the compass date back to this time?  Campers will learn all about these contributions and more while learning a new language.
