Unit 3: Perú, Portugal, Philippines, Côte d’Ivoire
Welcome to the “World Explorers’ Club” – A Cultural Awareness Thematic Unit for Young Global Explorers Ages 3-10!
Join us on an exciting global journey with our “World Explorers Club” camp, a thematic unit created for children who love to learn about different cultures and places around the world. Each day, we’ll ‘visit’ a new country, diving into its unique culture, cuisine, wildlife, interesting sites, and fun facts. We aim to highlight the distinctive and awesome aspects of each country, focusing on cultural awareness in a fun and interactive setting. We will be exploring Peru, Portugal, the Philippines, and Côte d’Ivoire, with all activities conducted in English.
Day 1: Exploring Peru: Our adventure begins in the land of ancient civilizations, Peru. Campers will discover the mysteries of Machu Picchu, learn about the vibrant festivities like Inti Raymi, and understand the importance of traditional crafts. We’ll explore Peru’s diverse ecosystems, home to the Andean condor and the Amazon rainforest. Activities may include creating colorful Peruvian textiles and a mini-Machu Picchu model.
Day 2: Journeying through Portugal: Next, we head to Portugal, known for its maritime history and beautiful landscapes. The children will learn about the traditional Fado music, the significance of the Discoveries, and make clay mockups of famous Portuguese custard tarts. We’ll explore Portugal’s stunning coastlines and its role in global exploration. Campers might craft their own caravel ships or create art inspired by azulejos tiles.
Day 3: Discovering the Philippines: Our journey continues to the Philippines, a country of over 7,000 islands with rich biodiversity. We’ll delve into Filipino traditions like the Sinulog festival, learn about the iconic Jeepneys, and discover unique wildlife like the Philippine eagle. The day’s activities could include making a colorful festival mask and learning about the country’s diverse marine life.
Day 4: Celebrating Côte d’Ivoire: Our final destination is Côte d’Ivoire, a country with a vibrant culture and history. Campers will explore the music and dance of Ivorian culture, learn about the significance of cocoa production, and discover the unique Baoulé tribe. They’ll engage in activities like creating Ivorian-inspired masks and learning about the country’s rich natural resources.
Day 5: Celebration of Nations: This festive day brings together everything our campers have learned. Children will participate in a cultural parade, showcase their crafts and projects in a mini world fair, and enjoy music and dance from the countries explored. It’s a day of fun, reflection, and appreciation for global diversity, culminating in an unforgettable experience. Get ready for a vibrant celebration of the world’s cultures! (For 4-day camps, this will be done on the last day of camp).
Join us at the “World Explorers’ Club” for a week of cultural discovery, fun, and learning! This camp is ideal for children who are enthusiastic about exploring the world’s cultures in an engaging and educational environment. Get ready for an unforgettable journey across continents!
