Thematic Unit for Spanish Immersion Summer Camps

 

Regular Immersion Session

Ancient Civilizations – Fasten your seatbelts because campers are going to create their own time machine to learn about the Aztec, Inca and Mayan empires.  Children will learn new vocabulary as they journey to ancient Latin America to explore how the civilizations lived and thrived.

 Linguist Apprentices (Ages 3-5) Through music and play, campers will develop their conversational skills in a second language. Children will engage in arts and crafts and hands-on projects while learning another language.

Language Ambassadors (Ages 6-10) Campers will participate in project-based learning activities that will help them connect the foreign language they are learning to meaning, providing them the opportunity to develop their conversational skills while learning about fun and interesting topics.

Early Immersion Session

(Optional session – available only at some locations)

Supplemental thematic unit: Mystery of the Nazca Lines – Scientists believe the Nazca Lines (Las Lineas Nazca) were created by an ancient civilization on the Peruvian coast.  There are hundreds of lines and shapes created deep in the trenches, but it’s still a mystery as to who created them! In this week-long camp, children will learn different vocabulary related to patterns and shapes.

Linguist Apprentices (Ages 3-5) Campers will work on phonetic skills development in small groups, using rhymes and rhythm to further develop their conversational skills.

Language Ambassadors (Ages 6-10)Campers will use this time to work in small groups to develop reading and writing skills in the target language and practice their conversational skills by talking about the stories they are reading and writing in the second language.

Afternoon Immersion Session

(Optional session – available only at some locations)

Supplemental thematic unit: – Conquistadores and Explorers – Campers will learn about the fall of the Aztec and Inca warriors as conquistadors, Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro claimed the empires for Spain.  Children will jump back to the 15th century with these conquerors while learning the Spanish language.

 Linguist Apprentices (Ages 3-5) Campers will work on phonetic skills development in small groups, using rhymes and rhythm to further develop their conversational skills.

 Language Ambassadors (Ages 6-10)Campers will use this time to work in small groups to develop reading and writing skills in the target language and practice their conversational skills by talking about the stories they are reading and writing in the second language.
