🌸 What Is Día de los Muertos?
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican celebration observed primarily on November 1 and 2.
Despite its name, Día de los Muertos is not a frightening holiday. It is a colorful, heartfelt celebration of life, family, love, and remembrance.
Families honor loved ones who have passed away by sharing memories, preparing favorite foods, displaying photographs, and creating beautifully decorated ofrendas.
Some of the most recognizable symbols include:
- 🌼 Cempasúchil (marigolds): Bright orange flowers traditionally used to decorate ofrendas.
- 💀 Calaveras: Decorated skulls that are an important part of the celebration’s artistic traditions.
- 🕯️ Velas (candles): Used to illuminate ofrendas.
- 🦋 Mariposas (butterflies): Often associated with transformation and remembrance.
- 🎨 Papel picado: Colorful decorative paper with intricate cutout designs.
- 🍞 Pan de muerto: A special sweet bread traditionally enjoyed during the celebration.
For children, Día de los Muertos offers an opportunity to learn that families around the world have different—and beautiful—ways of remembering the people they love.

The workbook includes simple, step-by-step instructions to help families create an ofrenda at home, along with printable decorations and ideas for celebrating together.
🏵️ How to Make a Día de los Muertos Ofrenda at Home
One of the most beautiful traditions of Día de los Muertos is creating an ofrenda, a special space dedicated to remembering loved ones.
An ofrenda doesn’t need to be elaborate or expensive. Families can create a meaningful display using simple materials they already have at home.
Here’s how to get started!
Step 1: Choose a Special Place
Find a small table, shelf, or quiet corner of your home where your family can create the ofrenda.
Cover it with a colorful cloth or paper.
Step 2: Add Photographs
Place photographs of family members or loved ones you wish to remember.
Invite your children to share stories or ask questions about the people in the pictures.
Step 3: Decorate with Flowers
Add marigolds, known as cempasúchil, or colorful paper flowers.
Children can also color and cut out the flowers included in our printable workbook.
Step 4: Add Candles and Favorite Foods
Traditionally, ofrendas include candles, water, and foods that loved ones enjoyed.
For a child-friendly version, consider using battery-operated candles and a few favorite treats or family recipes.
Step 5: Include Meaningful Objects
Add items that remind your family of someone special, such as a favorite book, a musical instrument, a small toy, or a handwritten note.
Step 6: Share Family Stories
Gather around your ofrenda and talk about the people you’re remembering.
What made them special? What did they enjoy? What are your favorite memories?
These conversations can help children appreciate their family history and the importance of remembering those we love.
💛 Remember: Every family’s ofrenda can look different. What matters most is the love and meaning behind it.
🌎 Why Cultural Celebrations Are Wonderful Learning Opportunities
At Language Kids World, we believe language learning goes hand in hand with cultural understanding.
When children explore celebrations like Día de los Muertos, they’re doing much more than learning new vocabulary.
They’re discovering that people around the world have unique traditions, values, and ways of expressing love and gratitude.
These experiences can help children:
- 🌍 Develop curiosity about other cultures.
- 💬 Learn Spanish vocabulary in meaningful contexts.
- ❤️ Build empathy and appreciation for different traditions.
- 🎨 Express themselves through creativity.
- 👨👩👧👦 Strengthen family connections through shared experiences.
And because children learn naturally through play, combining language with crafts, games, storytelling, and cultural activities makes the experience even more enjoyable!
